# St Augustine

The capital of Spanish [Florida](index) and the oldest city in America, St. Augustine has about 1500 residents; mostly Spanish Europeans, with 200 Timucuan Indians and 100 Africans. 

It's protected by the garrison at Castillo de San Marcos and by the militia at Fort Mose.

### 1. Francisca's Boardinghouse

A large home in the west side of town owned by a widow, with about ten private beds available for rent for 1gp a night. Across the street is a rowdier tavern; sleeping space in the common room costs 5 sp.

### 2. Church of St. Augustine

Church founded in 1565; the site of the first Catholic mass in the continental Americas. The parish priest can be found here.

### 3. Governor's House

Governor Mendez's house, right next to the church.

### 4. Plaza de la Constitucion

A wooded plaza, with a well. Frequently used as a gathering area.

### 5. Aviles Street Market

Main market street in the center of town.

### 6. Harbor

On the western edge of Manzanas. Ships can be chartered from here.

### 7. Dry Dock

Shipbuilding facility.

Fort north of town; built for protection from British pirates.

### 9. St. Augustine Lighthouse

Lighthouse on Anastasia Island.

### 10. Fort Mose

Free black settlement north of St. Augustine. Residents were British slaves granted freedom upon converting to Catholicism and swearing allegiance to the King of Spain. Population of about 100.

### 11. Mission Nombre de Dios

Built to convert the Timucuan tribe to the north (now mostly Catholic). Contains a Marian shrine used as a site of worship. Most of the local tribe has converted and intermarried with Spanish creoles.

### 13. Convento de San Francisco

Franciscan convent south of St. Augustine; headquarters of Franciscan missionaries in this part of Florida.
